the Soil & the Sun debut music video, new music
Last week I heard a piece on NPR about sauropods. They described them as the “nice” dinosaurs—the ones that, in movies, would graze on vegetation, characterized by their long necks and large eyes. The discoveries that had them on the radio were new fossils. They found that Sauropods had “superhearing,” and that they grew remarkably fast.
I find myself thinking about the Soil & the Sun as this prehistoric beast—a monstrous, friendly dinosaur that carefully navigates and evolves to accommodate and survive the forest of our world. Between their first and third full-length albums they consistently grew their sound, always increasing their breadth and reaching to new heights.
Actual Replica Vol. 1 shows the first time tS&tS hasn’t grown in size, in fact their lineup has nearly halved—and yet, after a year long hibernation, they emerge no less vast. Exploring new aural plains, “Throughout The Night” and “As I Was One Day” show us a bright perspective of a dark place.
Curled up next to an underground lake, a lonely sauropod bends its neck at the sight of something once known. A color that it hasn’t seen in years. Its eyes grow to a familiar size. Slowly, it rises to its feet and lumbers toward the cave entrance. Sunlight breaks through the cloud of dust and lands at the sauropod’s feet. Forgotten colors dance along the rock wall behind the creature.
